Lighting the Way Encounter 4 Origin and the Creation Orokohanga of Te Ao Māori presents how the lines of emergence, whakapapa o Tāngata Moana, the People of the Sea are retold through a new medium of written text. For the missionaries to understand and live in this new society, te reo Māori was essential. Several members of the missionary community saw merit in learning te reo Māori both for communication and to preach Christian scripture. In this print, whakapapa is expressed in early Māori, Latin, and English.

Original limited art print created by Karol Wilczynska and Alan Te Morenga Litchfield, exhibited at IMPACT 10 Conference and Exhibition in Santander, Spain, 2018.

Description

Through this piece, Lighting the Way Encounter 4 Origin and the Creation Orokohanga, whakapapa as the lines of emergence, are shared across Tāngata Moana, the People of the Ocean. By the time when European and American navigators arrived, Māori culture was mature, having navigated over open oceans for several thousand years already. When Christian missionaries arrived, Tāngata Whenua, the people of the land, saw parallels between their whakapapa and stories of the God told by the missioners. There were those from both sides that saw a joining of peoples, possessed of common beliefs and philosophies but
who did not foretell the later impacts Tāngata Whenua would face.

For the missionaries to understand and live in this new society, te reo Māori was essential. Several members of the missionary community saw merit in learning te reo Māori both for communication and to preach Christian scripture. In this print, whakapapa is expressed in early Māori, Latin, and English.
