Grey Duck Pārera Small mixed media

The Pārera or Grey Duck is a native of Aotearoa that, due to environmental changes and hunting, is now thinly distributed where it was once common in Northland, Waikato, Gisborne, and Westland. Apart from it’s grey and brown plummage, the only splash of colour on its wing. These prints offer you the opportunity to see this beautiful duck every day.

The Pārera is distinguished by the pattern of stripes from its bill up to its  head and a dark patch on the top of its head. They have a white underwing and an iridescent turquoise green speculum on their wing (lower right).

The prints in this series are letterpress printed and hand coloured with Windsor and Newton drawing inks to make three colours in total. The colouring brings out the impression of the tonal variations of the bird.
